Cohiba

Cuba · est. 1966 · Habanos S.A. (Cuba) / General Cigar Co. (U.S.)

Created in 1966 as Fidel Castro's house brand, rolled at El Laguito in Havana and handed to diplomats for sixteen years before it went on sale to the public in 1982. The 1962 embargo means the name now belongs to two unrelated companies: Habanos S.A. sells Cuban Cohiba everywhere except the United States, and General Cigar Co. owns the American trademark and blends its own. A Cohiba bought in a U.S. shop is not a counterfeit and not Cuban — it is a different cigar wearing the same name.
