H. Upmann

Cuba · est. 1844 · Habanos S.A. (Cuba) / Altadis (U.S.)

Hermann Upmann was a German banker who arrived in Havana in 1844, opened a bank, and shipped cigars to his London office in cedar boxes stamped with his name. The boxes outlasted the bank, which failed in 1922. Menéndez y García later bought the marque and its factory went on to roll the first Montecristos. Cuban H. Upmann is Habanos S.A.; the American trademark is Altadis, and those cigars are Dominican.
