Montecristo

Cuba · est. 1935 · Habanos S.A. (Cuba) / Altadis (U.S.)

Blended in 1935 at the Menéndez y García factory in Havana and named for The Count of Monte Cristo, the novel read aloud to rollers on the galley floor. One shape, the No. 4, carried it to being the best-selling Cuban marque of the twentieth century. The trademark split after the revolution: Habanos S.A. holds it outside the United States, Altadis inside, and the non-Cuban Montecristos are Dominican.
